31 October & 1 November 2026 (Pastoral Page) A WEEKEND OF GRACE: CELEBRATING BAPTISM AND MEMBERSHIP
by Ps Lai Keet Keong
There are times in the life of a church that feel less like routine calendar events and more like a collective breath of fresh air. This weekend is one of those times! As we gather, we will have the wonderful joy of witnessing candidates publicly declare their faith through baptism and officially commit to our church family through membership. It is a weekend set aside for celebration, reflection, and a reminder of the transformative work of grace in our community.
To those who are stepping into the waters of baptism or through sprinkling, or making membership commitment this weekend: we want you to know that we are with you. We have watched your journey, and we have rejoiced with you. This step is not merely a ritual. It is a defining milestone in your walk with Christ. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”. This is the promise you are stepping into: a new identity, a fresh start, and a life made new in Him.
Baptism is the outward sign of an inward reality. As you go under the water, you are identifying with the death and burial of Jesus, leaving behind the old self and its burdens. As you rise, you are stepping into the newness of life, forgiven, cleansed, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is a public declaration that you belong to Christ and that your life is now secured in Him.
Likewise, membership is a beautiful commitment. In a world that often values independence and casual association, choosing to formally plant your life in a local church is a counter-cultural act of love. It means saying, “I am not just an attender. I am a participant. I am here to serve, to give, to be accountable, and to grow alongside my brothers and sisters.”
We know that taking these steps requires courage. It means making a public stand and perhaps sharing a testimony that feels vulnerable. But we encourage you with a simple truth: you are not doing this alone. You are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, a congregation that is cheering for you, praying for you, and eager to support you as you take this next step of obedience! So take heart in the words of the Apostle Paul, “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6). The One who brought you to this moment will faithfully finish what He started.
To the rest of our church family, this weekend is a call to action. We are not just spectators. We are witnesses to a sacred covenant. When the candidates make their declaration, they need to see our faces filled with joy. They need to hear our collective “Amen!”. Your presence matters. Your prayers matter. By showing up, you are telling these candidates that they are valued, loved, and deeply welcomed into the fold.
We also want to extend a warm invitation to those who may be on the fence or who are watching from the sidelines. Perhaps you have been attending for a while but have never taken the step to make it official. Maybe you have been feeling the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to be baptized but have been hesitant to take the plunge. This weekend is a beautiful time to witness what commitment looks like. Whether you are ready to step forward today or simply need to sit and observe, you are welcome here. There is a place for you at the table, and a place for you in the family.
As you prepare your hearts for this weekend, let us pray for the candidates, that they would feel the presence of God deeply, that any nerves would be replaced with supernatural peace, and that this weekend would be a mountaintop experience they will never forget. Let us also pray for our congregation, that we would be the kind of community that faithfully supports and disciples those who are stepping forward.
Therefore, let us come expectant, ready to celebrate what God is doing, and ready to embrace every person who is making this bold and beautiful declaration of faith.
