27 & 28 Dec 2025 (Pastoral Page) END OF YEAR REFLECTION: HOW HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED THE KING?

by Ps Lim Wei-en

As we come to the end of yet another year, let’s take a moment to reflect. In line with the theme of our pulpit series this year, how have you experienced the King in 2025?

To be more specific, here are some questions you could ask yourself.

1.      How have I experienced the King’s love?

Daily provision. Think of every meal you had (from the basic to the gastronomic), the safety and security of the home you could go back to each day, your many physical and emotional needs and wants that were met. Through these, God our Father provided you your daily bread and much more because of his love for you.

Comfort. Recall the times you were hurt this year, perhaps by the thoughtless words or actions of others. How were you comforted in these times? Did God send someone with an ear for your troubles? Did He lead your wounded soul to find rest in green pastures and quiet waters? Did He teach you how to be kind to yourself in a world that is not kind? None of these would have been possible without His love.

Guidance. When you needed wisdom to make a decision or to proceed with a course of action amidst uncertainties, how were you guided? Was it through the advice of a mentor, the leading of the Holy Spirit in your heart, or clarity of mind that came when you carefully considered the options before you? Again, the ability to discern was given because of the King’s love for you.

2.      How have I experienced the King’s power?

Protection. Think back on the times you encountered physical or spiritual danger this year. Or times when people had malicious intentions to hurt you. How were you protected from these dangers? Did the danger “just happen to pass you by”? Were you miraculously shielded from harm? Did you somehow manage to escape from threatening situations? None of these was coincidental. The King who has power over disaster and demons was watching over your every step.

Healing. Recall the illnesses you suffered and/or medical procedures you went through. Consider the amazing way your body was restored from these – the cells that were regenerated, the scars that disappeared, the new tissues and vessels that were formed, the muscles that were strengthened. Consider also the times you recovered from bouts of depression or anxiety. The King who has power over disease was laying His restorative hands on you.

Breakthroughs. Consider the new perspectives you gained, personal blind spots you were finally able to recognise or acknowledge, bad habits or addictions you were able to break, forgiveness you were able to receive or dispense. These and other breakthroughs were gifts from the King who has power over darkness. It was He who gave you newness of life.

3.      How have I experienced the King’s grace?

Forgiveness. Dwell, for a moment, on your many sins of commission (what you shouldn’t have done but did) and omission (what you should have done but didn’t). Acknowledge the sins you committed wilfully and unknowingly. Then, consider how, through the Cross, each of your transgressions in 2025 has been removed from you as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:12). The King’s final word over you is not “condemned” but “forgiven”. By grace, the penalty of your sins has been paid and you are now free.

Achievements. What are the (career, health and fitness, financial, relational or any other) goals you achieved this year? Perhaps you scored well for an exam, were promoted at work, got a decent performance bonus, set a personal best record for a sport, managed to get back on your feet after a difficult period, or drew closer to God and your loved ones. None of these came about apart from God. It is only by grace that He has given you the ability to achieve your goals (c.f. Deut. 8:18).

Redemption. Think of the many ways your poor choices or past failures in life could have imprisoned you for good, but did not, and you were able to go about your business in 2025. Recall how, in this past year, you managed to crawl out of some dark valleys that you had slipped into. Our King is a redemptive God who specialises in bringing hope out of despair, good out of evil, life out of death. Out of the ashes of your brokenness, God has, by grace, granted undeserved favour to you. The empty tomb is proof of this.

The King has been at work in every moment of your life this year. Have you slowed down enough to notice it, acknowledge it and thank Him for it? If not, take a few moments and do so right now.

And having experienced the King, may you go forth in gratitude and live out His kingdom in 2026 and beyond. May the King bless you.
